讲座概要

Prior literature documents the well-known home bias effect in traditional financial markets, but only limited research evaluates the impact of financial technology (Fintech) on the home bias correction. Using 21,391 technology reward crowdfunding campaigns over 2009-2019, we examine whether home bias effect plays a significant role in this fast-growing Fintech market. Results show that, technology campaigns attracting more domestic investors have a higher probability of successful capital raising and project implementation, which confirms the persistent impact of home bias. Further investigation indicates that the home bias effect on funding and delivery success a) is stronger when a creator has a higher level of “old” social capital, namely preexisting social relations like friend and family ties, b) is weaker when a creator has a higher level of “new” social capital, namely platform social networking capability. Cross sectional tests also exhibit that there are heterogeneous impacts of home bias across backers’ home-country levels of financial inclusion and investor protection.
