报告1Estimation of simple demand models for differentiated products

摘要:

In this talk, I aim to familiarize students with the structural econometric methodologies used in empirical industrial organization. Model of differentiated products are widely used in many sectors, including Air Transport, Education, Retailing or Car manufacturing. I introduce simple models with and without heterogeniety and show how one can identify and estimate them from data which are easily collectible.

报告2Demand for differentiated products: application to the airline industry

摘要

In the second talk, I show how these models can be used to study commercial implications (pricing and competitive analysis) and policy issues in the Air Transport sector. From US data which can be collected online, I will show how one can conduct a merger analysis (ex-ante and ex-post) and the estimation of tacit collusion among airlines.

报告3Price Competition and Endogenous Product Choice in Networks: Evidence from the US Airline Industry

摘要

We develop a two-stage game in which competing airlines first choose the networks of markets to serve in the first stage before competing in price in the second stage. Spillovers in entry decisions across markets are allowed, which accrue on the demand, marginal cost, and fixed cost sides. We show that the second-stage parameters are point identified, and we design a tractable procedure to set identify the first-stage parameters and to conduct inference. Further, we estimate the model using data from the domestic US airline market and find significant spillovers in entry. In a counterfactual exercise, we evaluate the 2013 merger between American Airlines and US Airways. Our results highlight that spillovers in entry and post-merger network readjustments play an important role in shaping post-merger outcomes.

汇报人简介

Christian Bontemps is Professor of Economics at ENAC and Toulouse School of Economics, specialized in structural micro econometrics and econometrics with applications to empirical Industrial Organization. He has publication in leading journals (Econometrica, Journal of Econometrics, International Economic Review). His recent research agenda considers inference techniques for models with missing information, leading to set identification of the parameters of interest. Moment inequality techniques are introduced to specifically be applicable to the models considered. One of the applications of this agenda consists in the estimation of market structure of the airline industry. Following the seminal work of Berry (1992), estimating the degree of competition of airlines from data which can be easily collected by the researcher is a simple but challenging question from the methodological point of view. C. Bontemps is also working on specification tests with a recent application on stochastic frontier analysis. On the air transport side, he has working papers on entry games and on airlines’ strategies. He is currently Vice-President of the Air Transport Research Society in charge of the publications. He has been also guest co-editor of the ATRS special issue in Transportation Research A and in Journal of Transport Economics and Policy. He has been referee for many top journals including Econometrica, Review of Economic Studies, Quantitative Economics, Journal of Econometrics, Journal of Applied Econometrics, Transportation Research, Quantitative Economics and Journal of Business Economics and Statistics.
