Guest Speaker：Prof. Luis Seco
Biograph:
Prof. Luis Seco obtained his Ph.D. from Princeton University, he is the Director of the Mathematical Finance Program, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Toronto and director of Risklab, a university research laboratory established in 1996, conducting research in quantitative finance, with special focus on asset management. Prof. Seco’s current activity is focused on sustainability, including climate risk, and is simultaneously the Chair of the Centre for Sustainable Development at the Fields Institute, and affiliate Faculty member at the Vector Institute for research in Machine Learning; Prof. Seco’s core activity is bringing artificial intelligence into today’s sustainability challenges to build a new better world for future.
Prof. Seco has supervised 57 graduate students and published over 100 papers in his academic career. He has won the NSERC – Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada -Synergy Award for Innovation for his achievements of developing University-Industry relationships. He was also admitted Knight of the Order of Civil Merit from the Government of Spain for his application of mathematics to foresee economic cycles.

Abstract
Recent advances in AI have revolutionized our ability to deal with complex problems to the extent that social science can now be tackled with quantitative methods based on machine learning techniques and large language models. This is happening at a time when social issues, such as climate, ESG, biodiversity, under the general banner of sustainability, are becoming main characters in the financial stage. In this talk, I will reflect on the implications of these methods for carbon emissions, portfolio construction, ESG scoring and, in general, financial innovation.
