摘要:
This study investigates how individuals spending change in response to health risk. By analyzing a comprehensive sample of bank-account data, we explore the consumption and investment patterns of individuals affected directly by the unexpected shock of COVID-19. Our findings reveal that facing the shock of pandemic, residents in the neighborhood with unforeseeable infected cases increase their expenditures on entertainment and jewelry, while reducing investments in insurance and mutual funds. Further analysis documents that as the distance from infected residences increases, the causality diminishes. These results extend time preference theory by providing evidence on distance exposure to threat playing an important role on time discounting.
